A practical flat-lay measuring guide for tops, trousers, dresses and jackets, including how to report measurements clearly and consistently.
Set up the garment
Lay the item flat on a level surface and smooth it without stretching. Use a flexible tape measure, start at the edge of the seam and keep the tape straight. Photograph the tape in place if it helps a buyer verify the number. Use centimetres consistently and round only to a level you can read reliably.
Useful measurements by item type
- Tops and jackets: pit-to-pit across the chest, shoulder seam to shoulder seam, sleeve from shoulder seam to cuff, and back length from the collar seam.
- Trousers: waist across the top laid flat, inside leg from crotch seam to hem, rise from crotch seam to waistband, and total length down the side seam.
- Dresses: pit-to-pit, waist across where the garment is shaped, and length from shoulder to hem.
Do not double a flat measurement unless you clearly label it as an approximate circumference. A waistband may stretch or sit differently when worn, so describe whether it is measured relaxed.
Write measurements so buyers understand them
Include the location and method, for example: “Pit-to-pit 52 cm, measured flat under the arm seams.” Avoid vague statements such as “fits like a 12” unless you explain that it is your own impression and the label size is also shown. Keep label size and measured dimensions as separate facts.
Check the item and photos
Measure the exact item in the listing, not a similar one. Make sure the photos and numbers belong to the same garment. If a seam is irregular or the item is stretchy, say so. See how to write clear listing details and the photo guide.
